Step 1: Browse our adoption gallery
Step 2: Book an appointment
All visits are strictly by appointment and slots will only be released 7 days beforehand. To book an appointment and find out more, click here.
Step 3: Show up for your appointment on time
- Please present your ID or show the confirmation email at the SPCA for verification purposes
- If the adoption counselling and interactions between the animal goes well (and find that the animal is a good fit for your family), you may adopt the animal on the spot when you visit SPCA; you will need documents showing your address and your passport / FIN. Please note that we do not have any reservation policy and are only able to hold the animal for 3 days after your initial adoption counselling, where our adoption counsellors approve the adoption
- If you’re adopting a cat, it is compulsory to mesh windows and doors at home, if you stay on the second floor and above
- A counsellor might require additional family members to come down or do a premises check – in such cases, conditions must be fulfilled before the adoption
- The whole procedure should not take more than an hour
For further clarification, please email [email protected].
Due to the high volume of adoption requests and limited manpower and resources, we seek your understanding if the animal of your choice is adopted before your appointment date. Adopted animals will be removed from the gallery.
- We do not have a reservation policy or dedicated service for informing people when a specific animal or breed is available
- We will conduct thorough interviews with potential owners to make sure we find the right match for our animals
- Priority will be given to those who apply first

-
What types of animals are up for adoption?
Dogs, cats, rabbits, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs!
-
Can I adopt an animal if I’m a Singaporean PR?
Yes! Singaporean PRs can adopt from us. However, if your NRIC does not reflect the address where your pet will be kept, do bring a tenancy agreement or utility bill for that premise. Note that if you stay in an HDB apartment, you can only adopt HDB-approved dogs.
-
Why should I adopt a pet rather than buy?
Up to 200 abandoned or unwanted pets end up at our shelter each month. Many of these animals are victims of impulse buying; their owners did not consider the responsibilities of pet ownership. If you adopt a pet, you are not only giving that animal a second chance but also helping us change more lives. There are so many homeless animals waiting for good homes!
-
How long will an animal be up for adoption?
Until they find a home! There is no time limit. Animals that come into SPCA usually have two options: to be adopted or released back into the community.
-
Is it compulsory to mesh my windows and doors if I adopt a cat?
Yes! Cat adopters must mesh their windows and gates. This is due to the high number of cases we receive regarding cats falling from heights (at least 250 a year) or complaints about cats roaming to neighbours’ homes.
Please visit https://www.catwelfare.org/meshing/ for meshing options. We do not recommend magnetic mesh as magnets may not be strong enough.
-
Am I allowed to let me cat roam outside the house?
No, we hope pet caregivers do not let cats roam free outside homes. If neighbours complain, HDB might continue banning cats. This will prevent us from working with the government to create a regulatory framework (e.g. microchipping and registration to deter pet abandonment) and improve cat management and welfare in Singapore).
Roaming also puts your cat at risk of falling from height, getting involved in vehicular accidents etc.
Keeping your cat indoors with a scratching post and necessities would be sufficient. We also do not allow cats to be caged up unless for reasons advised by a vet.

What are the HDB-approved dog breeds?
HDB apartments are allowed only one dog of a toy breed or its cross (that stands at 40cm at the shoulders and weighs 10kg or less). The list of HDB-approved breeds can be found here. While AVS licenses dogs for traceability purposes, HDB dog owners must ensure that they are allowed by HDB to keep their dog in their apartments.
However, some Singapore Specials (local cross-breed dog) might be HDB-approved under our Project ADORE scheme!
Under Project ADORE, HDB flat owners can now adopt selected medium-sized, local cross-breed dogs that are up to 55 cm in height with no weight limit. Interested adopters are allowed to keep only ONE dog per flat and have to abide by stringent ownership conditions, including the sterilisation, routine vaccination, training and licensing, and microchipping of the adopted dog.
You can use our adoption filter to sort HDB-approved dogs only. However, it’s good to double-check with our staff when you visit the shelter, as some Singapore Specials might qualify for Project ADORE.

Project ADORE, a scheme which allows the keeping of local breed dogs (Singapore Specials) in HDB flats, was first proposed by the SPCA and ASD in 2011 and a pilot was launched in 2012, administered by both welfare groups, MND, AVA and HDB. The scheme has enabled more than 1,000 street dogs to find good homes.
In March 2020, AVS announced that the weight restriction was removed and the maximum height was raised to 55cm, in a two-year pilot. This change means that more Singapore Specials can find loving homes.
In June 2022, NParks (AVS) announced that Project ADORE is now made permanent.
Under Project ADORE, we need to know that the dog is suited for home living and the neighbours are comfortable with the dog. We usually let them be fostered for about a month before doing a home visit to assess their suitability. Like all adoptions, we will do another follow up after the official adoption.

What is Project Adore (a scheme for some Singapore Specials to be HDB-approved)? What are the requirements?

Are all animals up for adoption sterilised, microchipped, etc?
All animals listed for adoption are sterilised vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped. Please refer to our price list for more details.

Why must I microchip my pet? How do I do it?
All SPCA animals will be microchipped.
A microchip is a tiny device about the size of a rice grain and it is usually implanted between the shoulder blades of your pet. It carries a unique identification number so that your animal can be traced back to you if it has lost its way. However, you must ensure that the microchip is registered otherwise it would be rendered useless.
Animals disappear for many reasons: they wander off, they may be spooked, or injured, run away, or are even stolen. As the pets’ owner, you have a responsibility in ensuring that your pet is safe and that also includes ensuring that your animal is sufficiently identifiable on all accounts.
You may register your pet with AVS via this link: https://ifast.sfa.gov.sg/eserviceweb/.
