Paws for a Cause 2025: A night for animal welfare
The SPCA’s annual charity gala dinner, Paws for a Cause 2025, held on 4 October, kicked off at the lovely One Farrer Hotel. With its lively “Pawlympics” theme in the spirit of the Olympic games and an atmosphere charged with generosity, the evening ultimately raised an outstanding S$800,000 in support of the SPCA’s mission in Singapore. This was a huge achievement for the SPCA, as it surpassed previous years in terms of total funds raised.
A Marathon for Animal Welfare
The Olympics theme was chosen to highlight how the fight for animal welfare in Singapore is more of a marathon than a sprint. Each victory attained, no matter how small, symbolizes an improvement in animal welfare across the nation. As Confucius said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and similarly, behind every marked improvement in Singapore is the accumulation of efforts from many others.
Opening Ceremonies and Leadership
The night began with guests filtering into a beautifully decorated ballroom, many dressed in creative, sport-inspired outfits befitting the Pawlympics theme. After a brief welcome, the programme opened with a series of compelling speeches that set the tone for the evening. Our guest of honour, Mr Alvin Tan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development, gave a riveting speech.
SPCA leaders reflected on the year’s achievements, ongoing challenges, and the vital role of community support. A major highlight was the introduction of the organisation’s new Chairwoman, Wai Ying, whose heartfelt speech about her personal experiences with her own animals deeply moved the audience. This offered a rare insight into her private life and the core purpose of what the SPCA stands for.
Pawlympic Fun and Fundraising
With the speeches concluded, the night shifted into a festive gear. Guests mingled and posed for photos, fully embracing the spirited theme. The Best Dressed Table Award became a crowd favourite as three tables competed in creativity and flair, with a couple dressed in striking racing attire perfectly capturing the competitive Pawlympic energy. The room was further energized by an electrifying dance performance by cheerleaders who tossed each other into the sky to the delight of the audience.
As a volunteer and guest, I joined three other teams in selling S$50 raffle tickets, and together we raised more than S$20,000. Guests eagerly purchased tickets for a chance to win prizes like the luxurious Royal Albatross cruise dining voucher. A special promotion this year—guaranteeing a prize for any purchase of 10 tickets—greatly boosted sales. Adding to the lively atmosphere were arcade-style game stations, including a racing simulation game that drew enthusiastic queues and laughter.
High-Stakes Auction Success
As the night progressed, anticipation built for the annual live auction. The Australian auctioneer used his eloquence and persuasion skills to fire up the crowd, ensuring the segment ran smoothly while raising huge sums. Fine wines sold for as high as S$5,000, while the coveted Sospiri dining experience soared to S$10,000. The overwhelming support moved the owner of Sospiri to donate a second dinner, which once again raised S$10,000.
The climax of the auction was the sale of the beloved SPCA dog statue, a familiar figure usually seen outside supermarkets. In a flurry of back-and-forth bidding, it ultimately fetched an incredible S$18,000, earning loud cheers from the room. Notably, the winner of the figurine won it for the second year in a row.
A Warm Supper to End a Meaningful Night
To close the evening, guests were treated to a hearty buffet supper. The spread featured tantalising chicken curry with naan, comforting porridge, and many more delicious dishes. As guests shared a meal and final conversations, the atmosphere was one of satisfaction and shared purpose. It was a meaningful celebration of humanity—a night for giving back to the community and giving a voice to those that are voiceless.
