Tom came into our care in March 2026 after he was surrendered when his owner was no longer able to afford his medical treatment.
At 6 years old, Tom has faced more than his fair share of health challenges. He was diagnosed with gingivostomatitis, which has since been treated through dental procedures and is currently well managed.
Tom was also initially presented with laboured breathing and respiratory distress. Further investigations revealed a significant accumulation of fluid within his chest cavity. A procedure called thoracocentesis was performed to remove the fluid, which was found to be consistent with chylous effusion (chylothorax).
Following treatment and supportive care, Tom's condition improved significantly. He remained bright, alert, comfortable, and maintained a healthy appetite throughout his hospitalisation. Repeat chest radiographs have shown no significant reaccumulation of fluid, and he is now clinically stable and ready to begin the next chapter of his life.
One important observation during Tom's recovery has been his response to different environments. While he remains comfortable and breathes normally in an air-conditioned setting, he may experience increased respiratory effort when exposed to warmer or more humid environments. As a result, Tom will require a home with 24/7 air conditioning to help keep him comfortable and support his long-term wellbeing.
Because of his medical history, adopters should be prepared to monitor him for any signs of respiratory difficulty, including:
- Increased breathing rate
- Exaggerated chest movements
- Open-mouth breathing
- Lethargy
- Reduced appetite
Prompt veterinary attention should be sought should any of these signs develop. While Tom is currently doing very well, periodic veterinary follow-ups are recommended, as recurrence of pleural fluid remains a possibility.
Despite everything he has been through, Tom remains an incredibly affectionate and gentle boy. He loves nose rubs, enjoys exploring his surroundings, and is always eager to spend time with his people. His sweet nature and trusting personality make him a joy to be around.
Tom is looking for a family who understands that adopting him means committing not only to the happy moments, but also to supporting him through any future medical challenges. In return, he will reward you with endless affection, gentle companionship, and all the nose rubs you could ever ask for.
From his curly whiskers to his toothless little meows, we hope someone will give Tom the safe, stable, and loving home he has been waiting for.
Could you be the special person Tom has been waiting for?
Due to his medical condition and need for 24/7 air conditioning, Tom is currently housed at a separate SPCA facility that is not open to the public. Should you be interested in meeting Tom, please inform your adoption counsellor, who will be happy to make the necessary arrangements.
Adoption is by appointment only. Make an appointment at https://spcasgappointment.as.me/
