The SPCA has written to the AVA to ask that standards be improved in establishments that are not keeping fish in suitable conditions. The SPCA is of the view that licences to operate aquarium shops should not be given to those who are not adequately equipped in their knowledge of fish care. We have also suggested that AVA consider focusing part of its annual responsible pet ownership campaign on the proper keeping of fish as pets.

The picture below shows Red-Eared Sliders that were kept in poor conditions an exhibition/sale at Harbourfront in July 2007.

At the same exhibition, sick fish were also observed by a member of the public. The case was referred to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority for further action following confirmation by the SPCA. AVA investigated on the same day and requested the exhibitor to remove the diseased fish immediately and attend to them.
