SPCA x NUS Press Recommends

Read for a good cause!

For a period of one month only (18 January 2020 to 18 February 2020), enjoy 20% off the below two books. NUS Press will also donate $2 to the SPCA Community Animal Clinic.

Marjorie Doggett was a Singaporean animal rights advocate and a pioneer in Singapore’s animal welfare arena. A founding member of the SPCA, her work laid the foundations of the SPCA and animal welfare in Singapore. Well-known and respected for her animal welfare work, few know that she was also an avid photographer, and published the first local photo book by a woman in 1957. Marjorie Doggett’s Singapore by Edward Stokes presents a collection of stunning photographs, many never before published, by Marjorie Doggett. Take a look at Singapore in the 1950s through Marjorie’s lens.

Imperial Creatures by Timothy P. Barnard documents how animals of all kinds were cherished, slaughtered, regulated, and employed in colonial Singapore. It is one of the first books to look at the history of animals in a colonial, urban society. It also sheds light on the history of SPCA and the role we played in improving the welfare of animals. The book will be launched at the Pod, National Library. You can RSVP here:
